Hawaii Man Charged With Manslaughter In 1-Punch Killing
A 26-year-old Maui man has been charged with manslaughter, accused of delivering a single punch that killed a man who had made an advance on his girlfriend, authorities said. David Homalon was arrested Thursday nightafter Maui County police, responding to a call, found Fabian Martinez, 45, lying unconscious in the parking lot of Mana Foods grocery store in Paia, Maui, according to Maui News. Witnesses told police that Homalon punched Martinez once in the face, knocking him to the ground. Martinez hit his head on the asphalt and fractured his skull, according to news reports. Homalon had been sitting with friends on the sidewalk outside of Mana Foods when Martinez walked past, according to court documents obtained by Maui News. Homalon recognized Martinez as having hit on his girlfriend in the past and asked for his name. Martinez apologized and the two were talking when Homalon — “out of nowhere,” according to a witness — punched Martinez in the face. The victim was taken to the hospital, where he died two days later, Hawaii News Now reports. Homalon was originally charged with first-degree assault, according to the Honolulu-Star Advertiser.
